April 8th
At our April Meeting. Chris Vaspar told us about entering Les Marathon des Sables - not once but TWICE. This extreme race is made up of 6 marathons run on consecutive days in the heat and difficult terrain of the Moroccan Desert. It looked like torture to me! https://www.marathondessables.com/en
This year 27% of the runners are women - this is a record. The race takes place between the 12 and 22 April. Good luck to them.
And we had three new members sign up tonight. A warm Chaddesden WI welcome to Wendy, Sam and Nora

They found that adding calcium to the clay resulted in white pottery which became very popular. Maggie ended by describing Josiah Wedgwood as a great innovator developing new glazes etc etc, he was the first to start producing pottery on a big scale in his factories.
We look forward to two special events this year. The King's Coronation and our 50th Birthday Celebrations in November.

- Women to women – turning over a new leaf in the lives of women tea workers, while in the UK we enjoy our daily cuppa, the mostly women tea workers who produce our tea struggle to access living wages, decent housing, sanitation or education for their children due to the low prices paid to producers for tea. – 2 members voted
- Online gambling harm: time for action, online gambling has substantially increased, resulting in a growing number of people being exposed to the risks of gambling-related harms. – 9 members voted.

March 5th Sue Cook The Ripple Effect
We had an interesting talk from Sue Cooke after wondering what a talk with this title was about !
It was about her experience of 911 when , flying to Cleveland on that fateful day her flight along with at least 16 others were diverted to St John’s in Newfoundland , an airport which usually only got 4 flights. Thousands of travellers were classed as displaced persons and given accommodation, hers was in a convent, she was there for a week and described the initial confusion and bewilderment at having to leave the planes with just their handbags and a blanket. passport and registration changes, lack of clothes to wear etc etc She told us how welcome they were all made and described her experience with a great sense of humour.
While we all remember the horror and sadness of the images and stories about that day she gave us a very entertaining story of her unique experience.
Needled to say when she had to fly back to America later that month for her work she insisted on travelling with British airways so that in the unlikely event of her plane being diverted due to terror attacks etc It would at least turn around and return her to Gatwick !
Our yellow themed table created much interest from members.

It was Chaddesden's turn to host the Hopwell Group Meeting this Autumn. We had booked the speaker many months ago and all preparations were in place in good time for the meeting held at Cherry Tree School in Chaddesden. He had three outfits with him which he wore along with different wigs and the all important ear rings! Pam, one of our Programme Secretaries, was invited on to the stage to help Richard do a 'quick change'. We even managed to shout out 'It's behind you' and 'Oh, no it isn't - oh, yes it is' during the evening. Richard was very entertaining.

February 3rd Anne Bailey
Grandma's Old Tin Trunk
As a child Anne was very lucky to live with her Grandma and Grandad and her parents in one house in Ilkeston.
Grandma had lots of beautiful things and as a little girl Anne would 'go foraging ' with her Grandma into the cupboards and drawers. Anne brought some of these things to share with us. We saw old photographs, lace collars, kid gloves, brushes, lace, cards, books, fans and a paisley shawl. It was a pleasure to see and touch these really precious itmes that hold so many memories.

Maurice Elliot - The Work of Remap
Remap is a very special charity, working through a nationwide network of dedicated volunteers. They use their ingenuity and skills to help people with disabilities to achieve much-desired independence in some aspect of their lives, or to enjoy leisure opportunities previously closed to them..
Remap’s unique pieces of special equipment are tailor-made and given free to the people who need them. Remap has 80 panels across England, Wales and northern Ireland, and helps 4000 people with disabilities each year.
Remap in Derby is made up of 18 volunteers. Maurice explained that Remap can also mean Retired Engineers Making Aids for People and he gave us an interesting talk about their work and brought examples of the kinds of things they do. Sometimes what they provide is very small but it makes a HUGE difference to those who need it. For more examples see

The AGM and Dr Wendy Freer and 'Canal Boat People'
We are pleased to announce that Pat Burgess is our President for 2013 - 2014. Thank you Pat for your ongoing commitment to our WI.
Dr Wendy Freer gave us an interesting insight into the life of Canal Boat People. The families who lived and worked on the canal boats in the 19th and 20th Centuries. One census record that Wendy had found listed a man, his wife and 6 children lived in a small space no larger than 7' x 8'.
How times have changed!
October 7th Keith Blood - Ghost Stories.
Keith is well known in Derby as a blue badge guide and we welcomed him back to Chaddesden WI for a new talk in his repertoire.
Keith began by asking 'Do you believe in Ghosts?' Some of our members were certain they did and about the same number were certain they didn't; with the majority sitting on the fence. Keith then shared personal stories of his experiences that cannot be explained. He had stories of local ghosts to share and we did a tour of the pubs in the City that have ghosts.
An interesting evening - food for thought.

September 26th Group Meeting at Risley
The Hopwell Group Meeting for the Autumn was held at Risley in the Village Hall. We were entertained by Grantham Danserye three Ladies and a Lord from the court of Queen Elizabeth I. Michael and Lynne Spicer explained the history of the costumes and demonstrated dances from the era. Some of the detail of which had been found at the home of the Gresley Family and are lodged at the Derby Local Records Office in Matlock.
The Competition was to create a dance to 'Rock Around the Clock'. We - Margaret (choreographer) with Audrey, Barbara, Rita and Janet - performed a 2 minute routine which included the hand jive. 6 WIs took part and Chaddesden were declared the winners after a Strictly style 'Dance Off'. We were presented with the Rose Bowl. So exciting!
It was nice we should win as it was Margaret's last meeting as Group Convener. Margaret has been supported by Audrey throughout her time - 10 years altogether - in this role. Margaret and Audrey were thanked for their work by the new Group Convener, Margaret Brown and presented with a gift.

GLENIS QUIBLE and 'That's Entertainment!'
John Hanson, Yul Brynner, Reg Dixon, Archie Andrews, Charlton Heston - all great entertainers. These and many more were mentioned on Monday night when Glenis took us into the Theatre, onto TV and onto the Radio to remember those who had entertained us over the years. As a 'younger' member of our WI, I was touched to hear other members singing 'In A Golden Coach'. A song that was taught to school children for the Coronation in 1953.

Presentation by Jack Rabbits Delicatessen of Derby
http://www.jackrabbitskitchen.co.uk
Here is Amelia from Jack Rabbits Restaurant and Delicatessen in Derby.
Amelia told us all about her dream to work with food and feed people wholesome dishes made from local produce.
She opened Jack Rabbits in 2009 in a small premises opposite the Cathedral in Derby. Since then the business has expanded and there is a
now a restaurant too next door but one!
Amelia is full of enthusiasm and energy for her business which will no doubt go from strength to strength.
We enjoyed leek, ham and mozzarella quiche, dried tomato and basil quiche, a selection of cheeses with crackers and freshly baked (proper) bread that Amelia brought from the Jack Rabbit Kitchen.

13th May Craft with Theresa Jane Hempsall
Here are some of our members posing with their freshly made flower brooches. Theresa provided everything we needed and showed us how to create these. It was not difficult and some of the more experienced crafters helped those who were not so accomplished. It made for a great evening of chat and team work!
7th May Skittles Evening
A Skittles evening at The Royal Oak in Ockbrook. 6 teams played under the watchful eye of Lesley and Carol. The men tried too hard and failed to knock down any more pins than those who played more sedately and the winners were Janet, Sandra and Jenny's team. And a nice buffet too - with scrummy cheese on toast! Sorry no photos I forgot to take the camera - Ed.

36 members and friends turned out for the Annual Quiz and Chips Event. There were 9 teams for the Quiz. The Winners were the 'A' Team - Margaret, Carol, Rita and Janet with 65 points out of 75. Thanks to Jan for organising the quiz and Carol and Gill for fetching the all important fish and chips!
April 8th HELEN MONK and 'Even more Poems'
Helen and 'The Chicken'
We enjoyed listening to Helen Monk with 'Even More Poems'. Yes poetry but spoken with such feeling. Helen gave us a little of the background to each poem and held a photo of each poet. We listened to Wordsworth, Brooke, Shakespeare, Yeats, Housman, Kipling and Masefield. And how we laughed at the poems of Pam Ayres - 'The Battery Chicken', 'The Black and White Minstrel' and 'Neds sails into the sunset'. A great evening. What fun!!
March 4th
CHRISTINE BECKET and 'A glimpse of China'
Christine
Christine chose to spend 12 months in China teaching at the University in Qingdao in Shandong Province. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qingdao
Christine shared her experiences and explained how different daily life can be in China compared to the UK.
Students take a nap at their desks in the break, they drink hot water out of a vacuum flask rather than cold from the tap.
We saw different food stuffs and were left guessing what some of the products were!
The policy restricting urban couples to only one child has been in place since 1979 and has led to significant changes in family life.
A thoroughly interesting talk. Christine had more to share so maybe a return visit to one of our meetings is in order.

Over 30 members welcomed the New Year in at our first meeting of 2013.
