Learning Opportunity Bursary 2022
Following the closure of Denman College DFWI decided to look in Derbyshire for suitable venues to conduct learning opportunities for members. We visited Hayes Conference Centre in Swanwick and have organised a ‘taster day’ in March to showcase this venue to members as well as to provide ‘taster’sessions in photography, art, writing and history. Hayes also offers residential opportunity with ensuite facilities and full board. The committee is hoping to organise a residential experience in the late Autumn of 2022.
Our Learning Opportunity Bursary for 2022 was won by Jill Griffiths. Jill will use this to attend the Hayes Conference Centre in Swanwick.

Members enjoy an excellent visit to Denman College June 2013
Janet, Jill, Michael, Carol and Barbara.
Barbara, Carol, Jill, Janet (and Michael) joined other members of the Derbyshire Federation for an overnight stay at Denman College sandwiched between visits to Blenheim and Bath.
At Blenheim we saw a Triathlon held in support of Leukemia and Lymphoma Research. Over 7,000 entrants took part. It was interesting and inspiring to watch as each athlete swam, cycled and ran the course. Apparently 1 hr 20 mins was a good time. We also had a tour of the house, walked in the gardens and visited the Butterfly House.
From Blenheim to Denman. The sun was shining so we were able to sit out and enjoy tea and cake on the terrace. The accommodation was comfortable; each room is named after a WI federation. After dinner we were entertained by James Mitchell with songs from the shows.
We left Denman after breakfast and made our way to Bath. Christine had organised a open top bus tour of the City. This was excellent and certainly gave us an insight into the history of the Spa with good views of the buildings. We then had free time to walk, have lunch and visit the Roman Baths and the Abbey.
It was nice to meet and have time with other local WI members. Our thanks to Christine Gardner who organised the weekend.
We recommend a visit to Denman. If you get the chance to go on an overnight stay like we did or to go as a group from your WI. Denman offers so many different breaks and activities. http://www.denman.org.uk/

Derbyshire Federation WI Members visit Denman College April 2013
Rita, one of our members, shared this about the weekend.
On Sunday six members from Chaddesden WI joined 49 other members of DFWI on a Heritage weekend, taking in a guided tour of Oxford, including the Natural History Museum, a peek into various colleges and other filming locations used in the ‘Morse’ series, and a whistle stop tour of some buildings of interest such as the Eagle and Child Pub used by C S Lewis and J R R Tolkien while they were writing the Narnia and Hobbit stories.
Sunday evening we stayed at Denman House and after dinner and the odd glass of wine we were treated to entertainment from some members of the (Sherwin Singers?) and a very racy song about underwear by Christine Gardner and other ladies from DFWI. We also had a talk from the husband of one member who took part in the Finals of Mastermind in 2006. Following a good night’s sleep in very comfortable en-suite accommodation we awoke to the singing of birds nesting in the extensive Denman gardens.
After full English breakfast we set off for Hampton Court where we enjoyed a tour of the Palace led by a lady in authentic Tudor costume. Lunch was followed by free time to have a closer look at some of the rooms and the chapel. Some of us also enjoyed a short horse drawn ride around the grounds – very bracing! We left at 4.30 and arrived home tired but having had the most wonderful couple of days.
When we first booked this trip we did feel that the cost was a little high, but after taking in the travelling, food, accommodation, entry to Hampton Court and the services of guides in both Oxford and Hampton Court and the entertainment on Sunday evening it was worth every penny! Thanks to everyone who had a hand in the organisation of the visit, we loved it!
Thanks to Rita and Carol for the photos. Ed.
